GRN, what happened to Rook? Are you now in charge of keeping the peace? I'm going by Maddy's previous post, maybe a year back where she uploaded a green thong pic (remember) Anyhoo, just my usual trolling. BTW, thanks for white knighting, you still uphold your chivalrous qualities that never got you laid.

I dont wish bad upon anyone, just when I see a post, "guys where is the battery?" I cock an eyebrow at the true intent behind female nature. We dont get too many womens here, unless maybe Kofla.

So your H2 is for sale...again?? That is sobriety messing with your head. We've been over this before, you have too much free time, no job, and your deceased parent's inheritance to spend. Look, go down to the Bunny Ranch, drop a couple of G's, and take back some fresh jerk off material and leave the bike alone.

Accept the invitation to a journey of your evolution both spiritual and cultural as illustrated by Rook's hairy ass.

Hi Maddy, I have that same year and color bike. I like the partial polished wheels on the special edition. I also have the SW-Motech rear carrier and use a top case when I need some storage. I don't see many with the rear rack which makes the bike much more usable as a sport tourer. I still have the original battery in my 2013 also. Ride on.

Battery is done,

Many thanks to those who shared valuable information and gave me the courage to do this myself.

I am rather mechanical but the zx14r is my dream bike and I would really die if i did something wrong.

I noticed the upper rubber nut grommet thing is perished and I guess i can buy one on fleabay or such, does any one know the correct identifying name of the grommet nut thing im trying to refer to please? Its the one that takes the long bolt at the top.

Thanks again guys I would be lost with out this group :-)

I think they are called T-Nuts and I believe those are M6 threads

If you look on Bike Bandit they have the 14R exploded parts diagrams for the exact Kawi part number

"Its the one that takes the long bolt at the top"...you're describing the grommet that goes in the fuel tank tab...is that the one?(the side cover upper bolt)If it is...it's now sitting in the back corner of your airbox. It won't end up in your throttlebodies however(I wasn't taking any chances...ya never know). You can reach it with a long tool that can grab stuff.Remove tank and open the inspection doors on the airbox. You don't need to FULLY remove the tank however. It can be manipulated and turned sideways across the airbox/front of seat frame(the bike's frame).Just don't kink the fuel line.Make sure it isn't gonna tip off the sides though. It'll stay there as long as ya don't bump it.
When reinstalling that grommet,DO NOT jam that bolt in it(when installing the side cover) and push in in any way.Thread by hand at first, then without pushing tighten it down.If it's not tightening at first, angle the bolt just a bit to cause friction on the grommet in the tab.Do not use any lubricant on that grommet.Ask me how I know lol. It's straightforward.Just take your time moving the tank and such. You can unhook the fuel line if you're worried...just follow the Service manual instructions.

Part # 92015...this is a 2013 ABS model.

Unless they've changed the design,it interfaces with the inner airbox.WHY they did it like this I'll never know.Maybe to get people to take their bikes to the dealer?

Note:If anyone knows this doesn't happen, please correct me...it's been a while since I did mine.I do remember having to do this procedure though several years ago. This is how I did it.You'll do fine.

Thanks guys, one difference is I found the nut as it had fallen off the back of the grommet and landed on the floor, I pushed it back in the rear of the grommet and did the cap head screw up.

I didn't have to get it from the air box.

Hi Maddy,

Glad you found it, the "rubber nut grommet thing" are called well nuts, at least on my bike (2008, yours is probably the same) there are 2 sizes, 5mm (part number 92015) and... actually I can't seem to find the size of the larger diameter well nuts.

Regardless, its a good idea to pick up a few spares, when you're working on the bike if you see any of these well nuts damaged replace them. As Grn14 alluded to, they're a nightmare to deal with when things go bad as the nut spins when you try to turn the bolt so you end up with a stuck bolt. The only way to fix that is to try and somehow access the back where the well nut is, hold it in place and pray to God that you can put enough force on the nut to stop it from spinning... so yeah, just replace them if you doubt them.

Looking at that pic...I'm confused.I think I see the grommet in the tab there. So you're saying 'the nut' fell off the back of it?These grommets don't have 'nuts' on them in the classical sense. The threaded part is part of the rubber grommet.A brass looking threaded piece molded to the inside of it.Since you got under the plastic tank cover there, did you pull the grommet out?How about a pic of that grommet...?That nut you're holding 'looks like' a locking style nut.The wellnuts don't have those....

The grommet has only the rubber body. And a bolt that goes into it...from the outside of course.

That nut did not come from that grommet...now I wonder...WHERE did it come from? It's a locking nut,so it had to come from something with lots of stress connected with it...say,A wheel nut or something.Something critical. It's not a wheel nut however.

No one here thinks this is just plain ODD? Unless someone added that nut to the wellnut. Are you the first owner of that bike?I think if the bolt was tightened down in there, there MIGHT be enough threads sticking out to cap it with a nut like that. But since it's a locker,I would think you'd need a wrench to loosen it and take it off.IDK.Not much room ta get a box wrench behind there.Or an open end.?????If someone DID do that, they probably lost a wellnut to the airbox already.Once they start degrading they can get pushed in there REAL EASY.

After being over tightened/compressed several times,
it becomes distorted and eventually the threaded insert part rips off.

Mine did the same. Here's a picture.

You notice yours is not silver colored(i see you have a goldish hue to it...but those threads are definitely goldish colored).Nor is it free of rubber material. It may separate from the main body..like yours, but it doesn't fall outta the rubber compound surrounding it.Unless this is somehow a first.I've had a couple of those fail myself.Completely broke like yours.Never had the threaded part come out by itself(from the rubber)...and certainly not silver colored.Kinda why I wish Maddy would have taken a pic of the whole grommet.

RE: Battery please

Now I DID buy some Chinese wellnuts.Smaller ones. The inner threaded part DID slide up the barrel and could be pulled out when tightening. Not secured the way the Kawi ones are at all.IDK.That nut looks to me like it came from somewhere else on the bike. Some other fastener.I could be totally WRONG.So a 'tightened' wellnut end somehow loosens from the bolt and ...falls out?Even if the rubber is shot?It would still have pressure on it from the remaining grommet piece.Just tryin to understand the physics of this deal here...

I'm not even suggesting Maddy's not saying what it looks like.I'd be inclined to have a gander in that airbox though.if it tore off,and went in there, then that nut is from somewhere else around that area. That's all I'm sayin.Could have come loose and dropped where she found it.Course,Maddy didn't SAY where she found it sitting...just that she found it.
I've had stuff like this happen as well.Be opening somethin up,a fairing or something, and a screw falls out.And then I remember..oh yeah, there's that screw I lost...or whatever. From something completely unrelated to what I was working on.

I mean, you have to admit...the centers are gold colored, not silver.UNLESS,the color of that picture is off.Which it looks like it is...pretty badly.

Where's the rubber like pikens? On that nut.It doesn't look exactly like his....the two I had fail looked exactly like his.

Okay...these are pics of that same part#.The inner threaded sleeve. No ridges along the flanged side.BTW..I HAD to use a torch to burn the rubber off this piece. It definitely was not gonna separate from that outer rubber casing. No way.Note..it's brass colored, not silver. The flat flange areas are...well,flat.No groove or anything. That nut you have there dear heart is NOT from that failed wellnut...

Please know I'm not saying you're lying or anything like that. You 'found' that nut.Somewhere in there.Naturally looking at the grommet and trying to tighten it with no luck,it's natural to assume it came off that wellnut.I suggest it came off something else...fell where you found it,and the rest of the grommet is in that airbox.Have you looked around for any missing nuts on that side?If you had to 'find one' to fit all the parts up...then you know where that nut in your pic goes?Yes?Some fastener is missing that nut,or it got dropped accidently in there.Something.Another thing to consider now is...that piece that(I suggest)fell into the airbox is now 'smaller' than a full wellnut.(mine stayed in one piece, and I accidently pushed it through trying to align the threads). That being the case,it now weighs less than a full one.IDK,but it could possibly get picked up from the intake volume at hard open throttle,or less.Possibly.Anyway...you really don't want to risk it hitting your throttle plates.I wouldn't,and didn't.Got it outta there before I rode it again. Was simple actually.Just time consuming.

Hi Grn14
The rubber grommet was still in the hole and just the nut fell off the back, when i removed the grommet I could see the marks where it broke match up.
Mine didnt fall off as it was still bolted on, after I undone the cap head and was wiggling the old batterie out i must have dislodged the nut part of it and it just fell to the floor, I didnt really see where it cane from, more so i seen it bounce off the bike onto the floor.

Hey Maddie.Well, you can see my concern here. The one in your hand looks NOTHING like the one I posted. That was my main concern. That it came from something else.Like I said...I had to use a blowtorch to crisp the rubber(actually burn it up) that was still around that piece then brush the piece with a steel brush to clean it up.It was not gonna free itself from that outer rubber.Yet yours looks totally free of any rubber or anything.Piken's pic shows that broken part. It's still got that rubber attached to it.It's not a clean 'nut' like yours. So how'd that happen. The rubber didn't just 'come loose'.They aren't made like that.Otherwise, they'd be like those cheap chinese ones. But they aren't.The threaded part inside will NOT come loose. The chinese ones, the threaded part slips in that rubber housing.Course, you don't find that out until you actually start to tighten it.And you wonder..'What the hell?'.Then ya can't get the screw out cause the inner part keeps turning lol.Ask me how I know

Hey guys been a while since I been on here. hello Maddy I have the same bike with lots of mods. I had a similar problem with that well nut a few times, I decided to JB weld a bolt in the frame hole as that well nut will go bad and you'll have to replace it after 3 or 4 times that you remove that bolt.

Don't forget to attach a Battery Tender harness to your new Battery!

The Battery Tender Jr. is the key to keeping your battery alive. I regularly get 10+ years out of my motorcycle batteries because they are always plugged in when not in use.
