Kruz, the voltmeter shows what/how well the battery and charging system is. Reading the wires are old school to me.
Kind of shows all 3 components to the charging system by watching the volts drop and rise with a digital meter.
For the battery's health of PUSH (means volts), you watch the drop and recovery of how much PUSH is held in the battery. For example:
12.8v is the ideal number for a good battery.
12.8v shows PUSH by remaining with that number with key on.
11.1v is the drop of load by the starter motor turning the engine over. Below 11v like 10v shows a poor old boy.
12.8v shoots immediately back to 12.8v. Shows a good/new battery. Have to watch the meter quickly before the charging kicks in.
Then the stator will show her numbers. For example.
14.4v at idle shows a good rotor and stator.
12.8v at idle shows a burnt stator.
15+v show a burnt out voltage regulator, but a good stator/rotor.
Typical numbers for a good running set of the 3 components.
