I can agree with replacing them.I've saved a few by doing that.I can tell you that from 08-09 the wellnuts were shit.My 08 KLR and a 08 250 that I worked on for a friend just rotted away.The older ones are the best.I've also used a little grease to help.

I'm going to be honest with you, the last time I took all of the cowls off this bike was back in December of '06 when I pulled flies and installed the PCIII and other goodies. Amazingly, most of the rubber bits have held up pretty well but the foam pads that get the most heat were either like charcoal briquettes or crumbled. The wellnuts were pretty cooked too but with them available online for 60-70 cents each it makes sense to change those out every few years.
Question: What is the difference between Kawasaki wellnuts and deer nuts?
Answer: Kawasaki wellnuts cost eight dollars apiece while deer nuts are under a buck......
