I just this morning replaced the rear OEM Metzeler M5 with another M5. I was quite pleased with getting 4,020 miles out of the stocker. As we know, your mileage will vary dependent upon your riding style. I'm lucky to live in the mountains and at least 75% of my riding is done in the twisties and the other 25% is droning along on the hwy getting there. I had a nice even wear from side to side, just the way it should be for a bike that's made for the sporty side of riding. IMO, buying a bike like this is a waste of money if all you do is pound the pavement in a straight line. Like I said, this is just MY opinion.

Yup, I completely understand your viewpoint.

I considered naming my cycle "Scalpel" as I tend to use it surgically in "straight line" fwy commuting traffic. The HP to Weight advantage is a tremendous asset and not readily apparent to the untrained eye...

I named it "Lightning Bolt" for the sheer thrill of WOT.

Ummm, back to the OP's point, and your's. Yes, I agree, mileage varies on riding style, the type of pavement encountered over the tire life, the type of day (hot here, usually), so many things.

I really dont know if the OP can actually change anything he's not already doing, to increase the tire life, per-change-out.

It's probably as good as it's gonna get if he needs high mileage. I think not as many on this site are interested in that, they're more along the lines of Kruz's style, and willing to pay for it (as previously discussed).

That is, there's ways to decrease tire life, per tire change-out. Primary is selecting more sticky rubber. Do that, and tire life decreases, per change-out. So, IMO, the OEM tire (the M5) is a good consideration for those desiring high mileage between changes (which decision you've made with your wallet).

I'm hoping the "new" M5 will be even better. I hope to hear good things from you, since you will be able to now tell us, when you're ready. Please do...

Yes, let know how you like the new M5, I think being its non-OEM and redesigned, it is going to be better

I was getting set to pull the trigger on a set of these M5's, and I think I may have talked myself out of it.

That's based on another thread where some of our B+B were discussing their results with these new M5 multi-compound. I think I remember the discussion under the "Did anyone consider the BMW S1000RR" thread. It got pretty far off track, but I think I remember that, towards the end, a few guys were talking about their experience with these new M5 and decided that the transition from "high life" rubber to "not so long life" rubber was really sharp.

That is, the wear pattern was such that there was a sharp change (transition zone) from "hard" to "soft" rubber, and it causes a very unsettling feeling when attempting to turn the cycle and move the contact patch over the narrow transition area.

They were mentioning that, to a person, they really did not like that and wrote the manufacturing process was "cheap" and poorly done. They all changed them out to some other tire, not bothering to wear them out.

That really got my attention.

Now, I'm looking for a new hi-mileage champ, in multi-compound, with better handling characteristics.

I see alot of discussion about high performance tires for a 14R. Anyone wanna talk about a good / fair compromise for swapping some performance for a commuter / touring multi-compound?

Thanks...

Sir! I would highly recommend the Pirelli angel GT or that Michelin pilot road III. Both will offer all but the absolute nut more than enough grip and great confidence at lean! Both are very well constructed and are returning not just good wear but lots of grip at lean. Tire life is excellent with both. I was talking tires again the other day with CaraBuser and these came up! I was all set to buy the road III's and at the last minute a little fairy swapped me to the pilot power III, but that's just cause of my addiction to turn and burn! :))) I wouldn't hesitate to throw either the angel GT or the pilot road III on Priscilla! Both are coming up roses! Your last paragraph sums it up, if were to swap out a track day for a ride to wolfs house, I'd be runnin the Michelin pilot road III in the 190/55-17 120/70-17

Metezler M5 : tire life 14r
08/13/13 12:43 PM

Thanks, guys.

Yup, I saw the threads about the 55's too.

I'm over 11 K miles on my stock OEM Metezlers. I sure wanted to like those new M5's, but I'm not feeling the love on this site for them.

I'm suspending the decision for awhile longer, I'm not down to the wear bars yet on either front or rear.

So, I changed the title in hopes of attracting more attention, pro .v con

No Cblast,

I stupidly did a nice burnout in the parking garage at work, then we all saw the steel bands. Problem is I live an hour from work, so I rode home on it like that. First time I ever rode around in L3... lol I'm hoping to get more miles out of the shinko, if I can resist the urge to make clouds of smoke.

Pilot Road 3's (with a 55 profile rear, if possible)=maximal solution for all weather performance and longevity in my experience.

Pilot Power 3 for fun, fun, fun.........rain or shine.

Meb my man, I guess why I keep chiming is exactly what Paul said! I am gonna again share something I did on the bike.

I gotta say this first. DON'T DO THIS SHIT IF YOU ARE NOT COMFORTABLE OR HAVE NEVER DONE STUFF LIKE THIS BEFORE. DON'T MAKE UR FIRST ACCIDENT cause ya (anyone reading), tried something unfamiliar.

So, I'm running them PP3's. Yesterday I'm at my buddies house, which is exactly 21 miles from my house. It is raining real nice big drops when I leave, roads are not standing water yet but they are wet. It was time of day, NO CARS. My buddy had to leave to go to his grandma's house so I decide to head home. Before I leave I text wife and Wolf, in that order. (I do that shit so if I don't arrive at point B one day at least someone knows to look). Then I decide to go F 2. I pull out, before getting second I can tell WRONG SETTING. I select it up to F 1. Hit the first corner, nice. Front end was stable and felt really set. Kool. My buddy is in front about 1/2 mile in a blazer. In the rain I roll past him at 130mph, as I got through 2nd and 3rd I could see hear and feel TC stepping in when my secondaries opened at a stock 6-7k! Duh DD D DDS D D D ! The fuckin feeling of TC intervention in the rain because you have the throttle smashed is ADDICTING!!!!!! The bike smoothly feeds in thrust that your head says IS NOT POSSIBLE IN ThE RAIN! Bike was fuckin pullin like a demon in the wet. Corners felt solid but I took all of em at a reasonable 20 over. Hit the straights pretty hard. I got home in a wife verified 12.7 minutes. She was a little pissed. I don't give a fuck. I read her some Wolf poetry and she simmered right down. I was a black missile STREAKING across the land....
In the wet. Thank you Michelin.
This MACHINE IS THE FINEST ROAD BIKE ON PLANET EARTH.

My friend in the blazer called me, said he never ever saw anything like that in his whole life. I am trying to get him to trade the 10 for the 14r.

I'm appealing to you, my friend. You're a dad, and have a couple beautiful kids, so I know you'll understand why I'm appealing to you.

Please tell your friend, CBlast, that we care for him very much. That, if he loves the people in his life, he'll take it back a couple notches. I dont know if he has kids, or if him and his wife expect to have any.

My .02 is, the way he's going he's gonna die loving what he does, but he's gonna die young.

Talk to your buddy, Please.

We care for you, man, take care of yourself. You're not getting paid for doin' that stuff on the street, and you're doin' it on the street. Folks that care about you are tellin you, and you're not listening.

If you gotta do this, take it to the track.

Please, I'm beggin' you, we dont want to hear you're gone.

Metezler tires SUCK.

I had a warranty claim denied by them, for another, different cycle, and after waiting two months for them to tell me.

The tires were obviously defective, and I had the issue confirmed by a motorcycle dealer mechanic before we removed them and replaced them with a different brand.

The different cycle has a forum, and the issue is all over that board. It's front end wobble related, with this brand being a major offender over many different cycles (of the same model, a DL650 V Strom).

Metezler denied my warranty claim after having the issue known to them for a year now.

Metezler tires SUCK.

I'm not buying any more, and I suggest you dont, either.

Yeah. I hear ya Meb. I'm trying too. I have two awesome kids. My wife is amazing. I know I need to step back a bit. This bike has captured me in a different way. It hands me things freely that I sought for sooooooo long Meb. You know. We all know. I find my self sitting in the garage at 0312 polishing or checking or thinking anoutbthatbintake howl. It's no excuse. I'm trying to hear ya sir. I'm gonna drive my dang cage and take the kids to dinner. Wife has duty tonight. She is everyday my hero. I have been being more than a little selfish. Thank you Meb. Thank you.

Meb straight up you touch my heart. I love C like a brotha, and I would not want any harm to befall him. He is an exceptional human being and worthy of our concern. But yah know man, C is chasing something he needs to work out. There are spirits on his shoulders he needs to talk to. I have my own, and you know what, when I am on top of 6th, I can talk to my dad in a way I never had before, before he died. I am chasing that same spirit. It's like this bike expresses my pain, my disappointments and my virtues. I know the same is true for C.

I have two beautiful kids, and an amazing wife. She says to me, before I launch and take off, if you go down, we all go down with you, so I ride with that on the top of my mind, before I set the ride. But you know what, when I am out there alone, and I searching for the top of fifth and burning through sixth, and I stand the bike up at 300 plus, I am in a vortex and feel like I am punching a hole into another dimension. In this world I am free, I am perfect and bike is a completion of every breath I take. We are, united in perfection and as I crest that top gear it opens channels of communication with the spirit world. I can tell all those who are gone. how I feel, I can break lose from regret, it is my drug, my release, my exsistential existence.

Tonight I stayed home from bike night, my wife's sister is here with her kids, we got four kids under six in my house and I feel happy, truly happy. Tonight will be the first night, that I skipped a ride by a cemetary where my friend is buried. Harold died in his 30's and I usually pass by at night on my way home to chat with him. Life is a balance, and if we are not pushing the envelope with an eye on the ground than Harold would question the very reason why we are here. As C you are grounded by your family, you also reach for that envelop. Your skills are not bound by the rules that tie most men, but yeah, as Meb said, remember, the ride you set, has to include a return flight.

Mad love Meb, and mad love C.
