I've been a Progressive customer for several years. Someone at work told me about them.
I just wanted what the law requires so I can get my yearly plate sticker. My GS alone was averaging about $50 until I got the 14. The first year the 14 only raised my premium $13. Last year the 2 bikes combined ran me $100.
Now Progressive sent me a statement saying they no longer offer this kind of insurance and passed me onto Progressive West Insurance. Now they want $230 for the bikes. They broke it down and the GS is now $37 and the 14 is $193. This is for what the law requires only. California law.
Liability to others: Bodily injury liability = $15K each person/$30K each accident.
Property damage liability = $10K each accident.
I haven't looked around yet and the $230 may still be cheap but a 130% increase pisses me off. I try to understand it's a "14/'Busa/sports car/speed" thing but I have a hard time agreeing with it. I could see a much higher premium on the 14 if I had collision, replacement guarantee, theft, that kind of thing. But why over 5 times as much to insure the 14 when it's just basic coverage with a set cap? I mean, both bikes weigh about 500 lbs and would do the same damage if I hit someone or something. Actually, the GS may do more damage having no plastic around it. Are they saying because it's rated faster I'm more likely to cause an accident?
Anyway. Rant over.
What I really want to know is who has cheaper insurance? I figure this is a great place to compare and get a good rate. If any of you have the basic coverage and it's less I'd like to know who the insurer is. I have a month to beat their price or kiss their butts and give in. I'd like to tell them no thanks to their 130% increase and thanks for the memories.
I appreciate any help.
