I have the oem 16T Zephyr front sprocket and it still whines a little bit
under accelaration. I'm absolutely positive that those noises weren't present
with the oem 17T.

1 Bad was saying on Bikeland that his zx14 with the 16T Vortex was whining and
grinding so bad that he thought that something broke.
He's running 17/45 now and said it felt much smoother.
I'm trying that next.

I'm planning on going from stock to a 16T KHI front with PP 190/55 rear. Does that sound like a good combo?

I currently run 16/42 with a PP 2cts 190/55- the oem front and Vortex rear sprockets.
Swapped around a couple of times with a 43T rear- very minor difference, prefer the 16/42.

16/42 here.Plenty of pop for the corners, decent mileage.Virtually as smooth as stock gearing.

I went from the stock 17/41 to a 17/42 combo...doesn't sound like much, but combined with my other bolt-on mods it made a nice little diff. The bike felt pretty much the same cruising, but def spun up quicker. I think a 43 out back or 16 up front would be as far as I'd want to go tho....the 14 has enough power that it doesn't need quite as dramatic a gear change as my busa did, and I'd hate to affect its smooth road eating abilities any lol. If I wasn't boosting my 14 I would have got a good full exhaust with a good map to give it a little more hit in the higher rpm's, keep the BMC race in there along with no flies, and prolly stick a 43 tooth on the rear and call it good. The 14 doesn't need much help to become a real fire breather

Wheelie and Eclipse on zx14.com have their bikes at 16/48- tops out under 160 mph in 6th gear.
That 48 rear sprocket looks like a stunt sprocket- almost as big as the rear tire!
Now that would obviously feel like a Ninja 250 on the highway at 80 mph!
Needless to say neither of those bikes is ridden on the street...

I've bene having a think about going (from stock) to 16T front AND 190/55 PP 2CT rear. Would the raised profile (i.e. 55) counteract the -1 in front to bring me back to standard (albeit with better turn in with the taller profile)?

Maybe I need to go to 42 on the rear at the same time to feel the benefit of gearing change?

Thoughts (Mass..hint hint...)?

Mass & Blue, I see but of you are running 16/42. I current have a 16t vortex sprocket up front with the OEM 41 in rear. I think I going to go to a 42 in the rear w/ the stock tire. Do either of you have vortex sprockets and honestly how much top end did you loose?

The +1 in the rear compensates almost dead on with the taller rear tire.

16/41 with a 190/50 rear tire = 16/42 with a 190/55 rear tire.

You will have to go 17/44 or higher in the rear if you want to keep your 17T oem front
(that and a longer chain) to achieve gear ratio closest to 16/41.

My next gearing change on the zx14 will be @ 17/44 with a 190/55 tire.

16/42 is plenty low for gearing for the street- mine carries the front tire
a few inches off the ground through 3rd gear at WOT.

So, just going down to 16T up front and a 55 profile rear tyre will work well?

You have to factor in chain lenght and wheelbase.
16/41 will bring your axle almost all the way back in the swingarm slots.
With a high mileage chain- the axle will be all the way back in order to
adjust the chain slack properly.

I'd suggest you go with 16/42.

Shame on me, have had my 16t for months now have not put it on yet, will do it this weekend. Please clear up confusion, tie back the clutch lever or not??? I have seen some say do it, some dont. I just want to be for sure.

Also can I reuse the washer?

Thanks

I hate to bite into this one again-you CAN use the washer again(I did).As for taping the lever back-I did.It worked on mine anyway.

I have changed the front sprocket a handful of times, and i've never tied the clutch lever. Never had any problems either. I also reused the washer.

Anyone want to swap a 44T (Vortex) rear for a 16T KHI (Zephyr) front sprocket? The rear is worth more I believe, but I'm happy to paypal the diff.

I'd like to try 17/44.

Factor in what a new chain will run you.
The 44T rear will never fit with the 17T front.

Aussie I have 44 Tooth Vortex I could sell, less then 500KM on it. The prob is the shipping might be NASTY ? I'm not sure it's worth the bother. You will love that ratio. Just remember if you go this route do not cut your new chain to short in case you go 17F/45R 500 kilometers later. I may know some one who made that mistake........shhhhhh. I had always planned a 16F/44R but I Love the 17/45 to much to make the change.

Thanks for the info Romans. I priced a Vortex here in Oz and it's not that $$ to worry about getting one second hand. I've only done 150 km on this 16T, so I just thought someone might want to swap for the cost of the shipping.

I'm running a BT016 190/55 rear, so the 17/44 might not give me the same kick that you got...assuming you were running a 50 profile? Maybe 45 would be the go, with the 55 rear?

Factor in what a new chain will run you.
The 44T rear will never fit with the 17T front.

Thanks for the heads up Mass. My tyre guy was saying the OEM chain doesn't look overly impressive, so I wouldn't mind getting a better replacement, even if I don't need it yet.
